Michel Therrien signs a three year deal

If Sidney Crosby is going to win his first Stanley Cup anytime soon, he'll be doing so with Coach Michel Therrien behind the bench. Therrien enters his third season as coach of the Penguins, having taken over in the middle of the season the year after the lockout, when ex-head coach Eddie Olcyzk was given the boot in the midst of a dismal campaign.

I think that this is an extremely important signing for the future of the team.

While there are knocks on Therrien (that he's a whiner, plays into other coaches matchups, etc.), the man does one thing that many coaches in the NHL, NBA, NFL, and other leagues have failed to do time and time again- Michel Therrien gets the most out of his players and then some.

That is a sentiment that cannot be said about 60 percent of coaches today.

The Penguins showed class in increasing Therrien's compensation for next season, the last year of his current contract, and then allowing the big bucks to kick in for real in 2009-2010.

Therrien is the second to last piece of the Penguins' "core" to be locked up long term, leaving only the outstanding young forward Jordan Staal to still be signed.

Atta boy, Ray Shero (also in line for an extension).

And, this is nice because a friend of mine, MT's son Charlie, will remain here long-term.

Solid.

The original PG article:

The Penguins and coach Michel Therrien have agreed on a three-year contract that would keep him with the team through the 2010-11 season.

"Michel has done a tremendous job with our team over the past two-and-a-half seasons, developing our young players while leading us to division and conference championships and the Stanley Cup finals," General Manager Ray Shero said. "He had one year remaining on his previous contract, and we could have simply talked about an extension. But we thought that, based on the success we've had together, it was time to negotiate a new deal, starting with an increase in compensation for the 2008-09 season."

Therrien, 44, has led the Penguins to a 94-51-19 record over the past two seasons.

"I'm excited to have a new three-year contract with the Penguins and am looking forward to continued success here in Pittsburgh," Therrien said. "It is a great hockey city with an outstanding fan base. All of our players comment on how much they love playing in Pittsburgh, and I can tell you that our coaches love coaching in Pittsburgh.

"We still have a lot of work to do, though, because we fell short of our biggest goal last season. Our goal is, and always will be, to win the Stanley Cup.

You're friends with HCMT's son? That's kinda cool ...

I'm glad HCMT is staying. I'm tired of all the whining and anger against him ... it's stupid because he's a good coach ... I don't even think I should explain why he should stay here because of tired of it. If people don't think he should be here, then they are ridiculous.

That's nice. I'm sure that both of HCMT's kids are good because he seems like a nice guy. I wish I was friends with someone in the organization's child ... but I'm a bit younger than Staal (my older brother's Staal's age) so I would be more geared towards being friends with the team ...

My Mom used to be friends with Alain Lemieux, Mario's older brother. She said he was an extremely nice guy. The Lemieux's are a classy group of people.
