It's fan appreciation night at the home closer tonight as the Penguins take on the NYI at Mellon Arena at 7:30 on FSN.
The New York Islanders are the worst team in the league. They are coming off the worst loss in franchise history (0-9) to the Carolina Hurricanes and they are not about to let that happen again.
The team the Penguins have to thank for the scoring and grit of their captain as he came over at the trade deadline. Lucky for them they now get at least a 4th round draft pick from the Penguins. They’re going to need it.
The only real offensive threats they have are defenseman Mark Streit, and center Doug Weight. Richard Park can be dangerous when he decides to show up. Kyle Okposo (team best 18 goals) and Frans Nielson could surprise the Penguins with their speed and good hands. Rookie Josh Bailey is also a bright spot for the Islanders, bringing his 24 points (7G-17A) in 64 games to the team.
Losing Rick DiPietro to injury has really hurt the Islanders. But youngsters Joey MacDonald and Yann Danis have shared the duties. MacDonald’s career save % vs Pittsburgh is .890 while Danis’s is .872. What a great night for Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby to pad their scoring numbers!
The Islanders have had a rash of injuries. They are playing without DiPietro, Freddy Meyer, Mike Sillinger, Andy Sutton, Trent Hunter, Andy Hilbert, Dean McAmmond, Kurtis McLean, and Blake Comeau, who fractured his wrist early in the Carolina game. Kyle Okposo is questionable with a strained groin.
The Penguins are still without Mike Zigomanis and Philippe Boucher, but both may be available in the post season.
UPDATE, per the Pens website: Max Talbot will be given the game off to rest and Philippe Boucher will be in in place of Hal Gill. Mathieu Garon will be between the pipes.
